Start your visit by going to Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Thimphu built in the 12th century. Stay near Motithang, the Lhakhang was chosen by Lama Phajo Drukgom Zhigpo from Tibet. Inside, you can find Chenrizig, an 11-headed, thousand-armed manifestation of Avolokitesawara. The prayer books in this Lhakhang are larger than the usual Buddhist texts. You can also purchase postage stamps, collector's items, and postcards at face value from the general post office, and see the Bhutan National Bank. Next, visit a local arts and crafts school to meet local children, and then go to the Traditional Medicine Institute where ancient healing arts are practiced. Finally, visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, a local wildlife reserve. If there's time, take a stroll through the main streets to see the Himalayan artifacts and textiles that make Bhutan famous.

Start your day of sightseeing by visiting Thangtong Dewachen Nunnery, also known as Zilukha Anim Dratshang. This nunnery, built in 1976 by Drubthob Rikey Jadrel, is the only one in the capital. Located just a few minutes' drive from the town, it is home to around 60 nuns who have dedicated their lives to spirituality and Buddhism.

Afterwards, take a short drive north of Thimphu and embark on a one-hour hike to Cheri Monastery. During your visit, take some time for personal reflection, journaling, or meditation. After the hike, return to your hotel or head to a local restaurant for lunch.

In the afternoon, witness the traditional paper making process using Daphnia and Edgeworthia shrubs. You will also have the opportunity to purchase beautiful writing sets made at the factory. Next, explore the Handicraft Bazaar, a government project that supports locally made handicrafts. Here, you can buy stunning kiras, which can be used as bed covers or wall decorations, as well as jewelry and more.

Finally, visit the Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 to honor the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, known as the Father of Modern Bhutan. This multi-storied Stupa will provide insight into the importance of Tantric Buddhism. End your day by returning to your hotel.

Starting from Thimphu, drive to Dochula Pass and pause to appreciate the stunning scenery and religious decorations. If weather permits, admire the majestic Himalayan peaks. These include Masagang, Tsendegang, Terigang, Jejegangphugang, Kangphugang, Zongaphugang, a notable table mountain in Lunana, and the highest peak in Bhutan, Gangkar Puensum.

Arrive in Punakha and check-in at the hotel. After lunch, take a delightful 30-minute hike through rice paddies and a village to reach Chimi Lhakhang. This temple honors Drukpa Kuenley, a revered 14th-century Yogi also known as the 'Divine madman' in the western world. He taught in an unconventional manner, using songs and explicit sexual humor. His influence can be seen in the bold phallus symbols and paintings on houses and temples. The temple is believed to bestow fertility blessings, attracting childless couples and struggling parents from around the globe.

Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan, remains the winter residence of the Chief Abbot. With a pleasant climate and nourished by the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, Punakha is the most fertile valley in the country. Today, start your day with a hike through the rice fields along the Mo Chu to see the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a magnificent monument built by the Queens and consecrated in 1999. Afterwards, drive towards Khuruthang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and other winter residences of the royal family, until you reach the impressive Punakha Dzong. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal as a religious and administrative center, the Dzong has been restored by the current monarch due to damages from fires and an earthquake. It is open for visitors during the Punakha festival and summer months. Strategically located at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, this ancient fortress serves as the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the Punak Chu and take a leisurely evening stroll around town.

Float along the Mo Chu River in Punakha this morning with your rafting guide. Pass fields and the royal palaces while looking out for Mahseer fish, which can grow up to 3 meters in length. Some locals claim to have seen Gangetic fresh-water Dolphins here, but there is no photo evidence of their presence in Bhutanese rivers. As you near the Punakha dzong, spot the old house of Changi-bum Galem (dated 1637 or earlier) and learn about the tragic love story of Changi-bumi Galem & Gasa Lamai Singye, known as the "Bhutanese Romeo-Juliet". Today's rafting will include gentle rapids of Class 2-2+, perfect for beginners.

After an early breakfast, head to Paro this morning and visit Semtokha Dzong on the way. This dzong is known as "the place of profound tantric teaching" and is located on a hill a few kilometers outside of town. Upon arrival in Paro, check in at your hotel.

After lunch today, you will visit two important sites in Bhutan: Ta Dzong and Rinpung Dzong. Ta Dzong was originally built as a watchtower and now serves as Bhutan's National Museum. The museum houses a vast collection of artifacts, including thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons, armor, household objects, and natural and historic artifacts. Rinpung Dzong has a fascinating history and is known for its beautiful wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore. Along the way, you will also see the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of 108 temples in the Himalayas. In the evening, you will have the opportunity to visit a traditional farmhouse and learn about local lifestyle and cultures.

Today, enjoy Bhutan's fresh air and stunning scenery on a half-day cycling adventure. Choose from three recommended routes: downhill biking at Chelela Pass, cycling to Drukgyel Dzong, or taking a bike ride from Jemina to Ta Dzong.

Chelela Pass, located at around 13,000 feet, offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Start at the top of the Pass and enjoy a thrilling 21-mile descent back to Paro.

Drukgyel Dzong is a 17th century fortress that now lies in ruins. Take the paved road to the Dzong and return along an unpaved farm road, completing a lovely 19-mile loop.

For a longer cycling adventure, start at the Town Square and bike along the Paro-Thimphu Highway until Khasadrap-chhu. Cross a bridge and follow the road through the Jemina valley. The trail begins at Jedekha and ascends to the Jele Dzong Pass. From there, loop back to Paro along the paved road. This mountain biking trail ranges in altitude from 7,480 to 11,811 feet above sea level and offers varying vegetation, including Blue Pine, Coniferous, Fir, and Juniper forests.

No matter which cycling option you choose, you will have the opportunity to experience the beauty of Bhutan's landscapes and immerse yourself in its natural wonders.

Today’s excursion will take you to the renowned Taktsang monastery, known for its stunning beauty. The trail winds through a picturesque pine forest, adorned with Spanish moss and fluttering prayer flags. If needed, there is a small cafeteria along the way where you can take a break. This remarkable monastery, built in the 1600s, clings to the edge of a steep rock cliff, with a breathtaking 900-meter drop to the valley below. Legend has it that in the 8th century, Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan, arrived here on the back of a flying tigress to defeat a demon. Guru Rimpoche meditated at this site for three months, making it a sacred pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang, a unique temple shaped like a chorten, one of the few of its kind in Bhutan. Constructed in 1421 by the renowned Tibetan lama Thongten Gyelpo, also known as Changzampa or the builder of iron bridges, the temple holds a fascinating story. It is said that a demoness was terrorizing the Paro valley, and the very hill on which the temple stands was her head. To subdue her, Thongten Gyelpo built a chorten-shaped temple over her head, as chortens serve as a means to immobilize demons. In the evening, upon returning to your hotel, you can enjoy a guided stroll through the charming town of Paro. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath at Naksel.
