Upon arrival at Bangkok airport, go to Gate 4 on Level 2 at Suvarnabhumi airport to catch the complimentary shuttle to the Novotel, which is only around 10 minutes away.
Day 2
BANGKOK TO PARO TO THIMPHU
Speak with the hotel concierge for your free shuttle back to the airport. Board a direct flight from Bangkok to Paro, Bhutan, with a flight time of around 4 hours.
Upon arrival in Paro, present two passport photos for your Bhutan visa. Your guide and driver will be waiting for you after customs. Your guide will meet you outside with a sign and assist you in finding your driver.
Our local guide will meet you at Paro airport. After completing airport formalities, we will drive to Thimphu, which takes approximately 1.5 hours. Check in at your hotel upon arrival in the capital.
Start by visiting Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Thimphu. It was built in the 12th century and houses Chenrizig. Then, visit the local arts and crafts school and the Traditional Medicine Institute. Finally, go to the Motithang Takin Preserve, a local wildlife reserve. If time allows, explore the main streets to see Himalayan artifacts and textiles.
Day 3
THIMPHU
Start your day of sightseeing by visiting Thangtong Dewachen Nunnery, also known as Zilukha Anim Dratshang. This nunnery, built in 1976 by Drubthob Rikey Jadrel, is the only one in the capital. Located just a few minutes' drive from the town, it is home to around 60 nuns who have dedicated their lives to spirituality and Buddhism.
Afterwards, take a short drive north of Thimphu and embark on a one-hour hike to Cheri Monastery. During your visit, take some time for personal reflection, journaling, or meditation. After the hike, return to your hotel or head to a local restaurant for lunch.
In the afternoon, witness the traditional paper making process using Daphnia and Edgeworthia shrubs. You will also have the opportunity to purchase beautiful writing sets made at the factory. Next, explore the Handicraft Bazaar, a government project that supports locally made handicrafts. Here, you can buy stunning kiras, which can be used as bed covers or wall decorations, as well as jewelry and more.
Finally, visit the Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 to honor the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, known as the Father of Modern Bhutan. This multi-storied Stupa will provide insight into the importance of Tantric Buddhism. End your day by returning to your hotel.
Day 4
THIMPHU TO PARO
Depart after breakfast to Paro and stop at Semtokha Dzong en route. Upon arrival in Paro, check into your hotel.
After lunch, visit Ta Dzong, originally a watchtower, now the National Museum of Bhutan. The collection includes thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons, armor, household objects, and natural and historic artifacts. Walk to Rinpung Dzong, which has a rich history. The inner courtyard features wall paintings depicting Buddhist stories and cosmic mandalas. Along the way, see the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to experience local culture and lifestyle.
Day 5
PARO
Today you will visit the famous Taktsang monastery. The trail climbs through a beautiful pine forest with trees adorned with Spanish moss and fluttering prayer flags. There is a small cafeteria along the way for a break. The monastery was built in the 1600s and clings to a sheer rock cliff that drops 900 meters into the valley. It is believed that Guru Rimpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on a flying tigress and meditated for three months. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit the unique Dungtse Lhakhang temple. It was built in 1421 in the form of a chorten, one of the few in Bhutan. The temple was built to overpower a demoness that was terrorizing the Paro valley. In the evening, you can take a guided walk of the town of Paro.
