When you arrive in Bangkok, a representative will meet you outside the plane and guide you through fast track services to bypass long lines at immigration. Start your day in Thimphu with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088m/10,130ft). Along the way, make a quick stop to appreciate the breathtaking view and marvel at the chortens, Mani walls, and prayer flags that adorn the highest point on the road. If the weather is clear, you will be treated to a magnificent sight of the high Himalayan peaks towards the northeast. From this pass, you can see the following peaks (from left to right): Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongaphugang (7,060m), a dominant table mountain in the isolated region of Lunana, and finally, Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan standing at 7,497m.

Continue your journey towards Gangtey, and by lunchtime, you will reach Wangduephodrang. Descend into the Wangduephodrang valley, which is approximately 1,700m below the pass. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Wangduephodrang town before continuing your drive on the highway. Follow the scenic Dang Chu, winding your way through forests of bamboo and oak. As you cross the Pele La pass, make a stop to visit Radak Shang Temple. Finally, arrive at the hidden gem of Phobjikha Valley. The Gangtey valley in Bhutan is a picturesque place. It is surprising to find such a wide, flat valley devoid of trees after a difficult climb through dense forests. This adds to the feeling of vastness, which is uncommon in Bhutan where most valleys are enclosed. Today, we will explore the stunning Phobjikha valley and visit Gangtey monastery. Situated on a small hill above the valley, Gangtey Monastery is the largest Nyingmapa monastery in Bhutan and the only one on the western side of the Black Mountains. The monastery is surrounded by a village where the families of the 140 Gomchens, who care for the monastery, reside. Our next stop will be the Black Neck Crane Center, where you may have the opportunity to see the breeding cranes depending on the season. Various walks can be organized in this magnificent valley.

In the morning, depart for Punakha after having breakfast and visit Phobjikha Valley on the way. Phobjikha is a glacial valley in the Black Mountains, adjacent to the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park.

Upon reaching Punakha, check-in at your hotel. After lunch, take a hike to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple located on a small hilltop. The hike lasts for about 30 minutes and takes you through rice paddies and a small village. He preached in an unconventional manner for that time, using songs and bold sexual humor to convey his teachings. The influence of Drukpa Kuenley is evident in the phallus symbols and paintings on the houses and temples. It is believed that this temple grants blessings to women seeking fertility. The temple is a popular pilgrimage site for Bhutanese people, as well as childless couples and parents facing difficulties in raising children from all around the globe.

Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan, remains the winter residence of the Chief Abbot. With a pleasant climate and nourished by the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, Punakha is the most fertile valley in the country. Today, start your day with a hike through the rice fields along the Mo Chu to see the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a magnificent monument built by the Queens and consecrated in 1999. Afterwards, drive towards Khuruthang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and other winter residences of the royal family, until you reach the impressive Punakha Dzong. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal as a religious and administrative center, the Dzong has been restored by the current monarch due to damages from fires and an earthquake. It is open for visitors during the Punakha festival and summer months. Strategically located at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, this ancient fortress serves as the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the Punak Chu and take a leisurely evening stroll around town.

In the morning, head to Paro after breakfast and stop by Semtokha Dzong, a significant tantric teaching site, located a few kilometers away. Upon reaching Paro, check in at your hotel.

After lunch, go to Ta Dzong, originally a watchtower, now serving as Bhutan's National Museum. The collection includes thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons, armor, household items, and various natural and historical artifacts. Walk along the trail to see Rinpung Dzong, which has a captivating history. The inner courtyard's wooden galleries display exquisite wall paintings depicting Buddhist tales, such as the legend of the four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from Milarepa's life, Mount Sumeru, and other cosmic mandalas. On the way, you will also come across Kyichu Lhakhang, a temple built by the Tibetan king in the 7th century, marking the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to engage with a local family and gain insight into their lifestyle and culture.

Today, you will visit the famous Taktsang monastery. The trail passes through a pine forest with trees covered in Spanish moss and fluttering prayer flags. There is a small cafeteria along the way. The monastery was built in the 1600s and clings to the edge of a rock cliff, 900 meters above the valley. It is believed that Guru Rimpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on a flying tigress and meditated for three months. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang, a temple built in the form of a chorten. It was built to overpower a demoness that was terrorizing the Paro valley. Later, you can take a guided walk of the town of Paro.
